tapeshelf Video Downloader: a free extension that saves video from any site
We made a browser extension, and it’s a video downloader first. Open a page with a video, press the tapeshelf icon, pick the quality and you get one MP4 with sound in your Downloads folder. It’s free, it has no ads, it sends nothing anywhere, and it works without an account. Get it here.
What it does
- Finds the video on the page, whether it’s a plain file or an HLS or DASH stream. The likeliest video comes first; anything else on the page waits under “More on this page”.
- Shows every quality with its size, exact or “≈”, before you download. Set your preferred quality once in the settings and it’s picked every time.
- Joins picture and sound into one MP4 right in the browser. No program to install and no converter site that gets your link.
- Saves files of any size straight into Downloads/tapeshelf. If the browser is closed or crashes, the download carries on when it’s back.
- Takes the sound alone, as it is (M4A or Opus) or as MP3, and saves subtitles as an .srt file beside the video.
- Records live streams from the start of what the stream keeps, or from now, until you press Stop.
- Records what plays when a player builds its video itself and there’s no file to download.
There’s also a side panel that stays open while you scroll a feed, file names from a template, a history of downloads kept only in your browser, and a list of sites where the extension stays off.
A button right on the page
On VK, TikTok, Douyin, Bilibili, RedNote, Instagram, X, Reddit, YouTube, Twitch, Kick, Rutube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Facebook and Telegram Web, the extension puts its own Download button beside the site’s Like and Share. It opens a menu with every quality and its size, the sound alone, MP3 and Save to My shelf, and the file gets the site’s own title. You can turn the button off in the settings.
Free, with nothing held back
Most video downloaders charge for exactly the things that matter: streams, high quality, MP3, subtitles, live recording. Here all of it is free. Downloading has no daily limits and no paid tier, and the code is open under the AGPL-3.0.
What we hope for in return is simple: that some of you will want a place for the videos you keep. That’s the second button.
Your shelf, if you want it
Save to My shelf sends a video to your tapeshelf shelf instead of your disk. It stays private there until you share it: watch it on your phone, or send a link that runs out when you say. This part needs a free account. Downloading never does.
How to get it
The extension isn’t in the browser stores yet, so it comes from its page. One package works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi and Yandex Browser; there’s a separate one for Firefox, and a version from Firefox Add-ons is coming. Installing takes about a minute, and the page shows each step. When a new version is out, the extension tells you in its popup.
Video protected with DRM isn’t saved. And please save only what you have the right to keep: your own videos, ones you bought, ones you may keep for yourself.
