What it does
Finds the video and shows its sizes
Plain files, HLS and DASH streams, on any page. The popup puts the likeliest video first, and the rest wait under “More on this page”. Each quality comes with its size, exact or “≈”, and the one you prefer is set once in the settings.

One MP4 with sound
Sites often send the picture and the sound separately. The extension joins them into one MP4 right in the browser. Files of any size go straight into Downloads/tapeshelf, and a download carries on after the browser is closed or crashes.

Sound and subtitles
Take the sound alone, as it is (M4A or Opus) or as MP3. Subtitles are saved as an .srt file beside the video.

Live streams and players with nothing to download
A live HLS stream is recorded from the start of what it keeps, or from now, until you press Stop. Some players build the video themselves and leave no file: “Record what plays” records it as it plays and saves an MP4.

A side panel that stays open
Open the extension at the side of the browser, and it stays there while you scroll a feed or move from page to page.

And the small things
File names from a template: {title}, {site}, {quality}, {date}, {author}
A file name of its own for each site
A history of downloads, kept only in your browser
Sites where the extension stays off
Recording what plays without reloading the page, on every site or the ones you choose
Ad breaks marked in a stream left out
The sound language you prefer, when there are several
Streams downloaded four segments at a time
A Download button right on the page
On the sites it knows, the extension puts its own button beside the site's Like and Share. It opens a menu with every quality and its size, the sound alone, MP3 and “Save to My shelf”, and the file gets the site's own title and description. The button can be turned off in the settings.
On every other site, open the extension from the toolbar or the side panel: it finds the video there too.

Why it's different
Free, with no limits
Streams, 4K, MP3, subtitles and live streams are what other downloaders charge for. Here they cost nothing, and there's no daily cap.
All inside your browser
No program to install and no converter site that gets your link. The video goes from the site to your computer.
Files that play
Picture and sound come as one MP4, not a silent video and a separate sound file.
No size limit
Hours-long videos go straight to your disk, and a download survives a browser restart.
No ads, no tracking, open code
The extension sends nothing anywhere. Its code is open under the AGPL-3.0.

How to install
The extension isn't in the browser stores yet, so it comes from this page. It takes about a minute.
Download the archive and unpack it into a folder you'll keep: the browser loads the extension from there.
2
Open chrome://extensions. In Edge it's edge://extensions, in Opera opera://extensions, in Yandex Browser browser://extensions.
3
Turn on Developer mode.
4
Press Load unpacked and choose the folder.
Updates. When a new version is out, the extension says so in a line in its popup. Unpack the new archive over the same folder and press ⟳ on tapeshelf in the extensions page.
A version from Firefox Add-ons is coming. Until then the file isn't signed by Mozilla, so Firefox takes it in one of two ways.
Firefox Developer Edition, Nightly or ESR
1
Open about:config and set xpinstall.signatures.required to false.
2
Download the file and open it in Firefox, for example by dragging it into the window, then confirm.
Ordinary Firefox
1
Download the file.
2
Open about:debugging and choose This Firefox.
3
Press Load Temporary Add-on… and choose the file. It stays until Firefox restarts.

Keep the best ones on your shelf
“Save to My shelf” sends a video to your tapeshelf shelf instead of your disk. It's private there until you share it: watch it on your phone, or send a link that runs out when you say.
Downloading never needs an account. Saving to the shelf does, and it's free.
Yes. Downloading has no limits and no paid version: streams, 4K, MP3, subtitles and live streams included. There are no ads. Only saving to your tapeshelf shelf follows the limits of your plan there.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything that downloads to your computer works without one. You need a free tapeshelf account only to save videos to your shelf.
Which sites does it work on?
It finds video on almost any page: plain files and HLS or DASH streams. On VK, TikTok, Douyin, Bilibili, RedNote, Instagram, X, Reddit, YouTube, Twitch, Kick, Rutube, Dailymotion, Vimeo, Facebook and Telegram Web it also asks the site itself for the title, the description and every quality, and puts its Download button on the page.
Does it download from YouTube?
Yes, the version from this page does, in every quality and with sound.
Can it save any video?
Not video protected with DRM: the extension leaves it alone. And save only what you have the right to keep: your own videos, ones you bought, ones you may keep for yourself.
Where do the files go?
Into the tapeshelf folder in your Downloads. The folder and the file names can be changed in the settings.
How does it update?
Once a day the extension checks for a new version and, when there is one, says so in its popup. Download the new archive, unpack it over the same folder and press ⟳ on tapeshelf in chrome://extensions. In Firefox, open the new file the same way as the first one.
Is it on Firefox Add-ons?
Not yet, it's coming. Until then, take the file from this page: Firefox Developer Edition, Nightly and ESR keep it installed, and ordinary Firefox keeps it until it restarts.
Is it safe?
Its code is open under the AGPL-3.0, so anyone can check what it does. It sends nothing anywhere: no ads, no telemetry, and the history of downloads stays in your browser. It asks for access to all sites because it has to see which video a page loads and download it with your session on that site.
Try it on the next video you watch.
Free and open source, with no ads and no telemetry, in 20 languages.
