private sharing
Share videos privately, with the people you pick
Most places that host video want it seen by as many people as possible. tapeshelf works the other way round: every video starts private and reaches someone only because you sent it to them.
Every upload starts private
Upload a video in any common format (mp4, mov, mkv, avi, webm and more) and it lands on your shelf, private. Visitors to your shelf see its cover and a 16-frame preview, so they can tell what it is, but they can't play it. It isn't in search engines, and nothing on tapeshelf recommends it to anyone.
Five ways to let someone watch
- A temporary link. Pick one or more videos and how long the link works: an hour, a day, two or three days, or a week. More about expiring links
- A link for one person. Tie the link to an email address and it opens only with a one-time code sent there. On Pro it can also ask for a password. Protected links
- A link to your whole shelf. On Pro you can hand out an anonymous link that shows your shelf without your nickname. Delete it and it stops opening.
- Share on request. Someone who visits your shelf can ask for a private video. You share it, say no, or ask for one of theirs in return.
- A trade. Swap a video for one of theirs, one for one or several for several. How trades work
The other person doesn't need an account
A temporary link opens in any browser, on a computer or a phone. The person watches right there and can download the videos at full speed. Someone without an account can also trade with you: they upload a video of their own, and it stays locked until you both agree.
What you can take back, and what you can't
Revoke a link in “My links” and it stops opening at once. Videos someone has already downloaded or added to their shelf stay with them, so hand out a link the way you'd hand out a key. If you're the author, deleting a video removes it from every shelf, theirs included.
How the videos are protected
Access is checked on every request, the stream is encrypted, and the player never gets a link to the file. The place, date and camera details are stripped from every file you upload. How your videos are protected
Questions
- Is it free?
Yes. The free plan has no ads; it limits the file size (1 GB per video), the shelf (20 GB) and downloads. Pro, from €5 a month, raises the limits and adds passwords on links. Compare the plans
- Can I make a video public instead?
Yes. Tick “Make it public” and anyone with the link can watch it without an account. It still won't appear in search engines or in any feed.
- Can people find my videos through Google?
No. Shelves and video pages are closed to search engines. Only tapeshelf's own information pages are indexed.
